Our J Biber is much stronger than the skinny singer.

Interview with the J Biber of Invictus
Conducted by Jaimie Bougie

How long have you been a part of Invictus and what do you enjoy most about it?

I have been a member of Invictus since January 2nd, 2012, but I have been doing CrossFit since June of 2011. When I moved out to San Diego from DC, my old coach at District CrossFit, Andrew Killion, recommended Invictus. He has been an online athlete with CJ for awhile and highly recommended it. I knew what I wanted from my box, and Invictus fit in every way. Every box is different, but I wanted a welcoming box that was willing to help anyone at any fitness level get the benefits of CrossFit. It shouldn’t be just a gym, but also a community. There are tons of studies on the benefits of working out with other people. Also, having a positive mentality really helps in reaching fitness goals, and a person needs to be in a positive environment to have that positive mentality. I feel like I get all those things and more at Invictus. The coaches are knowledgable and more than anything, they care about me as an athlete and a person.

If you could be an animal, what animal would you be?

I actually decided this answer last week. I have over time developed a fear of flying that I never had before, and lately have been having dreams about falling. So, I decided I want to be an eagle, or a bird of some sort. That way, if I fall, I can just fly. πŸ™‚

What is your favorite CF workout?

I don’t have a set favorite, but I like anything with cleans or deadlifts. This might have to do with the fact that I excel in those areas. πŸ™‚ I really should say I love a workout made of just double unders, overhead squats, and toes to bar, because I struggle with the first two and still am trying to get back my kipping toes to bar. A person’s favorite workout should be what is most humbling and what they need to work on most, right? (Watch and I will see this nightmare workout in the programming next week. It better be named the Bieber Fever.)

If you were walking down the street with a theme song playing in the background, what song would it be?

This is not an if, but true fact. Anyone who knows me knows I am always walking into the gym jamming to something on my headphones. I used to study music when I was younger and it is still something I use to get me ready for a workout, among other things. I like upbeat stuff, and was known to demand “I’m Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO to be played during WODs back in my days at District CrossFit. Andrew Killion and Jenn Jones can validate that. But, senior year of college a group of friends all voted what each person’s theme song was, and I was voted to have a theme song of “Bossy” by Kelis. I’d like to think this was selected based solely on my dance moves (which I also can be seen doing around the gym) and nothing else, but who knows πŸ™‚

Is it true that you are Justin Bieber’s cousin?

If I say yes, do I get a celebrity discount? πŸ˜‰

Wait I don’t get it. Is his last name Bieber? Is this some inside joke I’m not privy to? I want to be on the inside!
