How to Safely Cartwheel Dismount from a Handstand
Video by Travis Ewart

Are you afraid to work on your freestanding handstands or handstand walking because you aren’t confident with safely getting your feet back to the floor? Or maybe you’ve crashed and rolled a few times and are looking for an alternative dismount. You are not alone! Many have failed a handstand or handstand walk. Many have also injured (or frightened) themselves when crashing to the floor when they do. But fear no more – we have a solution for that!

Handstand Cartwheel Drill

In this video, Invictus Gymnastics Coach, Travis Ewart, shows you how to cartwheel off the wall from a wall-facing handstand. This is a great drill to practice the transition from having your feet in the air to getting them back to the floor whether it’s because you’re flailing and falling or gracefully finishing your handstand hold or walk.

Being Safer & More Confident in your Handstand Dismount

Besides building confidence, this dismount is WAY more graceful and much safer than crashing down or rolling your way out of a successful handstand or handstand fail. Once you’ve mastered this drill, you can move on to practicing the handstand fall-over, the next step in the progression and a back-up plan…just in case. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
