Do Your Accessory Work to Ensure Strength Gains!
Written by Hunter Britt

I have made this reference before…If you are going to do a puzzle, you always find the edges and corners first. In lifting, your form and balance are those pieces. Form is obvious and we often know if something looks right or wrong. However balance – and I am talking about balance between your muscle groups – is often harder to see. Since we can not see it without a trained eye then we often ignore that aspect. Enter the Invictus 8-Week Strength Program which includes accessory work to address your imbalances. There’s still time to join the cycle that starts this week!

Examples of Imbalances in Lifting

  1. You can deadlift up to your knees, but fail the finish = weak glutes
  2. You can get under a clean, but can not stand it up = weak quads
  3. You stand the deadlift all the way up, but right at the beginning of your pull your back rounds to an incredible arch = weak abs and all-around core

Instead of just deadlift more to hope that problem 1 or 3 goes away. Let’s get smarter on this. Your weakest link is going to continue being the weakest link until it is given special attention. That is where your ACCESSORY EXERCISES come in to play. Use them to target certain muscles that are lagging and holding you back. The major benefit of accessory exercises – outside of the ability to isolate and target areas – is that they do not beat the body up as much as the major compound movements so you will not wreck yourself for future days and can continue to train nearly the same as you do now.
