Meet the New Coach – Bryan Miller!

Hello Invictus Family! My name is Bryan and  you may have met or at least seen me around recently. I would like to introduce myself and tell you a little bit of my CrossFit story.

I found CrossFit in 2008 while training for the Navy. Like most everyone else, I thought I was in shape when I tried my first workout, but quickly realized I was painfully wrong (Fran Fail 21-15-Died). After a brief stint in the Navy (medical discharge), finding myself and figuring out what I wanted to do with my life was difficult. Through hours of gym time and training, I realized that I was as passionate about coaching as I was competing.

I geek out. Ask my girlfriend how many hours I spend researching on the weekends – videos, articles, programming methods, books, diets, athlete psyche – you name it, I have probably read it or tried it. In 2011, to satisfy my love for coaching (at the ripe old age of 21), I became co-owner at Beaverton CrossFit; if you’re ever in the Portland, OR area, check them out! As a co-owner, I was inspired by CJ’s focus on high quality coaches and gym unity/family/community. It is clear to me that those aspects have enabled the success and longevity of the Invictus brand.

I work hard and I love competition. In June of this year, with the help of CJ and his competition programming, I won the North West Regional and fulfilled a longtime goal of competing in the CrossFit Games. In a word, I felt blessed. Competing side by side with the CrossFit greats was unreal and having three top 10 finishes wasn’t too bad either. (Let me know if you want some pointers on the Combat Side Stroke!) In 2014, I am hungry for more and ready for the challenges of a new region.

So, to bring it all home – earlier this year when the Invictus hiring announcement went out, I knew I had to go for it. An opportunity to further develop my coaching skills, to train with some fantastic athletes and to be a part of one of the most supportive gym communities ever was a once in a lifetime sort of thing. So, with the support of my family, my Beaverton CrossFit gym family and my girlfriend, I threw my name into the hat.

Now that I am here, I am experiencing firsthand the community that is Invictus! Everyone is so welcoming and kind. I am excited to share my knowledge and learn from the amazing coaches around me. If you see me in the gym, be sure to say hello and I look forward to meeting and coaching all of you!

Outside of the gym I am an avid snowboarder (Oregon=Snow), but have resigned to the fact that I will have to take up surfing (California=Sun) – I hear there are some decent places to surf around here. 😉 I also enjoy eating…A LOT, and my girlfriend may or may not have turned me into a foodie – so if you have restaurant suggestions send them my way. I’ll see you guys around!
