Measuring Progress with a Nutrition Vacation
Written by Invictus Member Syd Naumer

I have to admit, I’ve always been one to be insanely critical of my body and where my weight was. I would freak out if I couldn’t work out every day and would never eat enough if I didn’t workout hard enough or if I ate poorly the day(s) prior. But ever since I started working with a nutritionist a year ago, I have learned to understand that even if I don’t work out, or if I take a much needed “nutrition vacation” that my body will still function and stay where I like/want it to because of the hard work and effort I have been putting in leading up. I have never been more comfortable and confident in my own skin than I am now!

The Nutrition Vacation Test

I spent the last week in Austin, Texas, for my sister’s wedding and while I was there, I took a “nutrition vacation”. I didn’t track any of my meals, only worked out a couple of times before the wedding festivities started, and I drank and ate a lot. But most importantly I had a lot of fun!

The best part to this past week was that I know my body appreciated the break from being so strict with my nutrition and exercise routine every day. While I was conscious during my trip of what I was eating and didn’t pig out on junk food or sweets really ever, it felt good to just take my mind off something this simple and enjoy the little things. I mean, my sister was getting married so this was a very special time to be able to enjoy without restriction or worry.

In the past, even considering a nutrition vacation would have freaked me out – my thought process being that it would derail me or that it would sabotage all the hard work and strictness I had been putting into my health and fitness goals. But I was pleased with the result and the PROGRESS in that I was able to do it without making myself crazy over it.

Result: Progress on Two Fronts!

With that, I am coming into this week feeling better than ever! When I left for my trip I was consistently on the heavier side of 146 pounds. Weighing myself this morning, I am sitting at 144 pounds – and that’s after a week off!!! That just shows and proves to me that everything I have been doing working up to this last week has shaped my body to be able to handle a week of not tracking my food intake and that having fun and enjoying yourself does play an important role in our health and fitness. So besides the progress on the scale, there was probably even more progress with my mindset surrounding my health and that’s a pretty awesome feeling!
