The Invictus community suffered a tremendous loss on Thursday evening when longtime member, Sea of Green supporter, mother of Nichole, and friend to all – Mary DeHart – lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.

This is hard to fathom for those who knew Mary – she was such a force of life not only in the gym where her fellow Invicti knew her best, but as a wife and mother, serving others in her community, and as a small business owner with her husband.

Mary joined Invictus shortly after we opened our doors in 2009, and quickly became a regular at the 9am class, making the over 40-minute drive to the gym each day to hang out with us. Surely she liked the workouts, but it was the community that was important to her and she was an integral part of molding what it is today. She was one of the original members of the Sea of Green at Regionals competitions and also in group classes where she always cheered for and supported her fellow classmates with a jovial spirit.

She was incredibly generous to everyone in the gym – especially with new faces – always taking the time to make sure everyone was included and acknowledged, even if it meant partnering up with someone who wasn’t as experienced. She kind of liked that, actually. It allowed her to let someone else shine instead of taking the spotlight.

She was really funny with the kids too – holding secret, side conversations with any of them who were hanging out while their parents worked out.

And she was incredibly strong. Much stronger than she let on, yet not wanting to be the center of attention and all. Sometimes you would look over and see her deadlifting a couple hundred pounds like it was a toothpick when she thought you weren’t looking. She always laughed when you busted her for it too.

Sadly, she’s the next loved one who has lost their battle with cancer. There probably aren’t very many reading this who haven’t lost someone to this devastating disease. Although they aren’t here to fight any longer, we can hold them in our memories and continue to battle this disease so it can’t take anyone else from us.

There will be services for family and friends on Saturday, February 29th, 5pm, at the Kingdom Hall, 2080 Encino Drive, Escondido, CA, 92025.

For the Sea of Green who want to honor Mary and anyone else who has lost their battle, or who is still fighting it, please join us for the Battle Cancer Pre-Event Tour, Downtown on Tuesday, March 10th at 4:30 & 5:30pm or at Sorrento Valley on Thursday, March 12th at 4:30 & 5:30.

Invictus will be hosting two Battle Cancer Series events this summer – one at Invictus Boston and one at Invictus San Diego Downtown. If you’re interested in participating as a volunteer, athlete, or donor, head over to their website to get yourself signed up.

“Force of life…” YUP! That’s spot on! I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Mary as thoroughly or for as long as many other members of the Sea of Green, I got to coach and work with her for my first year. She and Sam Copp were always cracking me up in the 9am class – being the totally goofy, but ridiculously strong ladies they are! She busted my chops in the best way possible. Her smile and laughter are still seared into my memory, as well as her love for wall balls. Her LOVE for you Nichole shone out… Read more »

I am so sad to hear about Mary’s passing. She was so much fun to workout with as part of our 9am crew!! Loved seeing her smiling face every morning for the years I worked out at Little Italy location. My thoughts are with Nichole and the rest of her family during this difficult time ❤️

In the gym sometimes there are those people that brighten the room and make you feel at ease everytime they come in. That was Mary for me. I looked forward so much to 9am when she was in the gym. Mary was typically in the gym super early before class would start and I loved our banter back and forth of my threats to make the class run a 400 for a warmup and her witty rebuttals. I cant help but smile thinking of the joy that she always found each day. And man she loved to talk about her… Read more »

I have so many fond memories of Mary and our 9am crew! She was a force to behold in both her incredible strength, and gentle soul. We had a special bond both having twins. She gave me advice on raising my girls and would burst with pride talking about her twins. I feel so blessed to have known you and your spirit will resonate within me not only working out at the gym, but also as I watch my twins flourish as yours continue to do!! I love you, Mary and I love you, Nicole! ??

Talk about a ball of energy! Mary was always ready to talk and laugh whenever I saw her. She had the latest Crossfit gossip and made me smile with her commentary on the CF culture. She would come up with the most random comments and drop them on you as she cruised by to her next workout. She was a hoot! But best of all, she gave us our beautiful Nichole. 🙂

I am so saddened by Mary’s passing. She and I worked out for years together at the old gym in Little Italy. Mary did that thing that people do who are naturally funny— she would have a regular conversation while at the same time her brain was working on a different level to find the word play and joke hidden within the conversation you were having. She was full of wit. And she raised an amazing daughter. I have no doubt that Nichole’s strength, resilience, and grace come from Mary.

I am absolutely heartbroken. Mary was such an integral part of our community. Her sarcasm always cracked me up, and while she sometimes liked to put on a tough exterior, her actions constantly demonstrated her love for her daughter (our amazing Nichole DeHart-Kribs) and our community. Mary spent between 90-120 minutes in the car each day to visit Invictus, and still managed to participate in or volunteer at most of our community events. She also generously volunteered at the CrossFit Games and Regionals in the early days of the sport…sneaking away from her duties only to make sure she could… Read more »

I am very sad to hear about Mary. She was an example of strength both externally and internally. She kept out 9am crew on our toes with her witty comments and that twinkle in her eye! She will be missed.?

Wow. This news was devastating. Mary and I were two of the “more mature” members and she was always my favorite partner. How many times were we scolded for chatting instead of doing burpees or running?!? (Yes Nick). And she was such a generous soul. Brought my whole family (at Mary’s urging) to Nichole’s wedding reception. Great memories. Hugs and prayers to Gary, Austin. Nichole. Through the years, we met the whole family; all generous and giving people. My favorite workouts were those where Mary was there. You will be missed, my friend.
