Jorge Gonzalez: Progressing Inch By Inch
Written by Blog Follower Jorge Gonzalez with Coach’s Note by Michele Vieux

Coach’s Note: It’s been awesome coaching Jorge Gonzalez from afar. He’s been following the blog from Montevideo, Uruguay, and posting results since October, and has been improving left and right – not only with his strength and conditioning numbers going up but his body fat percentage going down around 10 percent to date! He even signed up for his first CrossFit Open just to challenge himself. I asked him how he managed to pull all this off – read below to find out.

I’m originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela, but I moved to Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, in 2015; it was here where I found CrossFit.

I first heard about Invictus during last year’s Regional, mostly because I’m a Lauren Fisher fan; but I started following the blog in the beginning of October, because my coach recommended me to follow the Performance WODs – he thought I might make good use of it because of my body type and how I like to attack the workouts.

I got super serious on my workout since October, but also I’ve been focusing a lot on my nutrition, cleaning up my eating habits, doing meal prep sessions to plan ahead what I’ll be eating for the week, and making sure I have good options available for me at all times. Theres also been a lot of experimentation and learning to cook for myself (at 32!!!) which has been a lot of fun.

My CrossFit community has been super helpful as well. Not only in the motivation and mental side of things when progress seem though (being 120 kgs and trying to pull off most movements required a lot of encouragement and love from my coaches). On the practical side of things; I keep telling everyone that my turning point when I was struggling to start to drop weight and came in for a workshop on nutrition that my box offered to all the members, this was like an eye opener for me.

Even though I still have some bad habits that need weeding out – like I crave some pizza and coke at least once every two weeks, or go to some dinner parties with friends and let’s just say I indulge myself a bit – I try to compensate with good habits, like making sure I wake up before 7am on the weekdays and at 9am at the latest on the weekends to be sure I grab a breakfast. I also stopped skipping meals, which I used to do a lot. I drink a lot of water during the day and try to sleep at least 6 hours every night to pull 3 deep sleep cycles.

I’m not really pushed by the competition aspect of our sport not even at our local level, as I’m not very competitive by nature, but I’m so enamoured with the discipline of CrossFit that progressing inch by inch is a huge motivation for me, even if sometimes I have to take some steps back to keep moving forward, it’s all part of the process. This has also translated to my challenge to be slimmer and fitter each day. Sometimes my experiments on recipes backfire or I have a bad week and I see how I slip back but I just try to take it as it comes, shrug it off and learn from it and keep going.

I just think that my level of progression and dedication is still in its infancy, but I hope it an add value to the community.

congratulations on working towards your goals! Just stick to it and you’ll eventually achieve your goals. When i was working out I experienced some adnormal joint pains and found out it has something to do with our flexors, there’s a pretty good review about it, feel free to check it out http://wp.me/p8jBMO-1J

It has really been an honor to coach someone as dedicated as Jorge, Crossfit community is just starting in Uruguay and characters like this are what make it so enjoyable from every aspect! Some athletes are getting ready for their first Crossfit Open here in Crossfit Cimarron and this confidence has been given to them thanks to you Crossfit Invictus and your outstanding programming, I couldn’t be more thankful as a coach and athlete. I haven’t posted results yet but I will start to since I deeply admire your community. And thank you Jorge for your trust guacho!!!

I’ll start to bug all of us who follow the program to post our results. I think accountability has really been a key factor for the improvements I’ve experienced.

I’m so grateful for the support you give to us man, but also the encouragement and support from our community has been invaluable to me.

I always remember when on my first week we started to talk about goals and the enjoyment of the sport and you just laughed to me and said “you’re hooked bro” XD
