CrossFit Invictus Nuno and Shane on Kwaay Paay
Invictus Member Walk & Talk
Written by C.J. Martin

One of my favorite things to do is to get outside and breathe some fresh air. I spent most of my formative years in Oregon, and while the weather doesn’t compare to San Diego, the opportunities to be in nature were endless. You could find hiking trails under beautiful, tall trees within 10 miles of the house in any direction.

While my opportunities to be under a canopy of towering pines is somewhat limited in San Diego, there are still some decent hiking opportunities within 10 miles or so of my home and the gym. My current favorite trail was introduced to me by Josh Bridges…and I believe he might have been trying to kill me on that first outing. You see, Josh took me (and our friend Jenny LaBaw) to Kwaay Paay Trail on a day that we were planning to do a trail run. Well, he took off and my “run” quickly turned to a wheezing fight for oxygen. To their credit, Josh and Jenny stopped to wait for me a few times…and then as soon as I caught up they would take off again. It was a humbling experience.

Since that first experience I have gone back to the Kwaay Paay Summit Trail many times. I find that if you’re not trying to keep up with the world’s second fittest male and the sixth fittest female, the trail is extremely pleasant, and the view from the top is breathtaking.

I would like to share the positive experience of hiking Kwaay Paay with our members. The goal will not be to race to the top for time (as Nuno and Shane were doing in the photo above), but rather to take our time to enjoy the scenery and conversation. A couple of the Invictus coaches and I will be leading the hike, and we would love to have you join us. It’s also a great opportunity for you to pepper us with any questions you might have about nutrition, fitness, how to win the Look Good, Feel Good Challenge, etc….

***UPDATED – Due to the Xterra Trail Run Series on in Mission Gorge on February 5, we will be switching our location to Cowles Mountain for the February 5 adventure. This is an AWESOME hike!!! I do this with my hiking doggie group on our full moon hikes and the views from the summit are well worth the steep, but short, climb to the top! I was looking forward to trying this in the daylight, but I’ll have to opt out. Even with the half hour earlier start, not sure I’ll be able to get back home to drop the doggies off and make it to yoga on time…and I REALLY need the yoga. Really a must for anyone that hasn’t done this trail.
