Mental Toughness – Overcoming Obstacles to Performance
Written by C.J. Martin
What separates the elite CrossFit athletes from their competition? Over the years of watching guys like Bridges, Speal, Dutch and others, I have noticed that it isn’t just athletic talent. At the upper echelon of our “sport of fitness” all of the men and women are ultra-fit. The workouts are won or lost on the ability to overcome all mental barriers to optimal performance. It means managing and harnessing pre-event anxiety and effectively blocking out that voice in their head telling them to rest so they may catch their breath. They have perfected the ability to stay focused on the task at hand regardless of their physical duress.
Of course, nobody is better at this than our own military special forces. A good friend, former SEAL and BUD/S instructor has spent a lot of time researching and speaking with those who have mastered the ability to overcome fear, anxiety and duress to complete whatever task they have been assigned. He has been kind enough to offer to present his findings to our members for free next Tuesday night, June 23, at 7:30 p.m.
I strongly encourage all of you to attend. This is invaluable information that should not be missed. Please RSVP on the whiteboard at the gym, or email cj@crossfitinvictus.com. And if you’d like to order a Mmmm Good Meal for dinner that night, please email michele@crossfitinvictus.com.

I like to check out what other crossfit’s are doing and i happened to come across your website today, and was wondering if you would be filming, and/or posting the BUD/s instructor when he speaks on the 23rd. I am preparing for BUD/s class in February and would love to have some insight into how a real SEAL deals with the anxiety. I know only a little about dealing with the pre-workout anxiety and do fairly well at it, but knowing some of the secrets of someone like a SEAL instructor would be priceless for my preparation for the BUD/s course.
yesterday was my first FGB. i can see where some people would have apprehension before this workout and how it could be a soul crusher. i happen to have enjoyed it immensely, and wonder… can we do it again soon? ppllleeeaassee?
Your an animal Tony. FGB is my least favorite WOD. The one minute of supposide “rest” feels like 10 seconds and is barely enough time to catch my breathe. It is a great workout but I am not looking forward to doing it again any time soon.
I think this is an awesome topic!! I personally feel lately that I have a mental block. It is interesting because I know what I am physically capable of and when I don’t reach my potential those barriers grow hence creating this vicious cycle! It is absolutely amazing how your mentality can take you SO much further athletically!
Mind over matter!
I am realizing how important it is to take ownership for when you are not at your potential (eating, sleeping, stress) and to celebrate your success in WODs otherwise overcoming these mental barriers become 10x more difficult.
Looks like Parker has a mean hook grip going there!
Had to modify the workout because I don’t have anywhere near enough room to crawl for 40 yards without bumping into half a dozen bicept curl machines or other useless equipment so I subbed.
5 x 155# Hang Clean, 10 x Ring Dips, 20 x Double Unders 9 + 2 Rounds.
POS, you should’ve subbed heavy bicep curls for the bear crawls.
Thanks Mark, I thought that I was getting with my hang clean only reversed.
John,
I am afraid we will not be taping the seminar. I will talk to our guest speaker though about getting his presentation to you somehow. Otherwise, contact me offline and I can put you in touch with a few good guys to talk to about getting through BUD/S.
