FilFest '09 - Awesome group, but who's the idiot on the phone?
LoveFest ’09
Written by C.J. Martin
I just returned from the 2009 CrossFit Affiliate Gathering – which was dubbed FilFest. LoveFest, however, might have been a more fitting name. Yes, there was a pool party with too many men wearing only underwear in a small hot tub, but that’s not the kind of LoveFest I am talking about. I am talking about the palpable positive energy and joy of being a part of the CrossFit community that permeated the weekend. Hugs and laughter were abundant, ideas were shared freely and all were reminded that the fitness revolution is as much about genuinely caring for your community as it is about a methodology.
The personalities in the CrossFit community are as diverse as one could imagine. The business models employed by affiliates are almost equally diverse. Some affiliates operate out of garages and others from mega-facilities; they require long-term contracts and others pay by the day; they coach groups only and individuals only; they have set coaching schedules and operate as drop-in facilities. But there are two fundamental similarities among all successful CrossFit affiliates – they believe in CrossFit and love the members of their community. They create environments that draw people in. They strive to be the best coaches they can be so that they don’t let their members down. In Coach Glassman’s parlance, they aim for excellence at every turn and trust that the money will follow down the road. We are believers at CrossFit Invictus – it’s why we opened the box – and it was refreshing to be surrounded by so many others who share a love for this pursuit of excellence.
Oh yeah, and if you have heard of keynote speaker Kyle Maynard and he is not one of your heroes, you might be the anti-Christ. (His parents better be on that list too as examples of individuals who constantly chose the right thing over the easy thing.)

Well CJ beat me to the punch. I was eagerly awaiting today’s post since I saw the advance copy of this photo from the main site and wanted to comment on that cell phone guy. I didn’t have to search too hard to spot our super coach CJ. Seems that you can take the boy out of the law office but you can take the lawyer out of the boy. STILL on the phone at all times! I guess the only difference is that it wasn’t a billable call! Keep up the stellar work CJ!
Edit: I meant “but you can’t take…”
following crossfit blog protocol…
AMAZING energy this morning! Honestly, that was the largest group of 6am CF’ers I’ve seen…and to top it off, solid athletes all around. Thanks to CJ for building an amazing fitness facility.
It was great seeing so many familiar faces, and all the new ones too. I’ve been out of pocket for about nine months spreading democracy in Iraq. Over there we had a nice crew of Marines come together for our own daily dose of CrossFit, and I think the lesson we learned there applies to Invictus. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program, no question there, but it’s a lot more. If you wanted to build core strength, you could do that at any gym if you really wanted to. What CrossFit offers (in my opinion) that really keeps folks coming back for more is that sense of community, and after this morning, I know CrossFit Invictus is exactly that…a community of driven athletes…that also happens to be in a great location, with fantastic equipment, an amazing atmosphere and a kick ass dog.
My apologies for the long blog. It’s great to be back…looking forward to getting to know everyone.

There a very large group this morning at the 6am class. Decided to use the 2 pood for helen. It made a big difference. First round was unbroken, but after that I had to break it up as necessary. Time – 11:06
Great workout this morning, a lot of energy form everyone. Stuck with 1.5pood….props to those hitting it hard with the 2pood.
T – 9:04 and a PR, glad to have made it before the downpour.
HOOYAHHH to the big group at the 0600. Biscuit, Sean and Frank….you guys are animals. I have to say that I was pretty impressed with Nate and Josh for slinging around that 70 lb KB. Yikes! The ladies were out in full force as well. Some GREAT scores posted.
Nice job to Wink for getting his PR and a sub 11:00. Saw some solid performances by all of our new friends who braved this tough WOD for the first tome.
My man Ryan also had a “Helen breakthrough” and used the rx’d KB for the first time. You’re getting stronger brother, keep pushing yourself.
I stayed with the prescribed weight and PR’d with an 11:06 (11:40 in September). I was shooting for a sub 10:00, but it wasn’t in the cards this time.

Way to go BC!! Sounds like Invictus was rocking this morning. Great work by all.
What a morning crew!
I’ve never seen so many people hitting a WOD together outside of a Cert! Wow was it cool!
BC, great effort man! I like the friendly rivalry we have got going, I can say that its making me push just that much harder in each WOD. Kudos to you good buddy.
Biscuit, Frank, Sean, Nate, and Josh – it might have been raining a bit during the runs, but you guys were smoking it – great job.
PR: 10:59
Thanks fellas’!
From Saturday’s blog: ‘Simon says someone at CrossFit looks like Bear Grylls (of Man vs. Wild fame) but we can’t figure out who it could be! Any ideas?’
Have we discovered who is going to get the new nickname “BG” or “The Bear”
With all of this POSitive energy on the blog today it wouldn’t be right not to feed off of it! Since tomorrow is a forced off day (even teachers occasionally have a busy day) I decided to make today heavy.
OHS’s to work on the midline (130×10,140×8,145×6,155×4,165×3,175×2) and since Mark told me Calvin was doing some BW OHS’s, thanks for the motivation, I finished with a PR of BW x 7 (185#) And then about 5-10 minutes later I finally met Heavy Fran! (135/45) Time 10:59. Next time sub 10!
I need to know was it the class’ decision or the trainers decision not to run in the rain? It won’t melt you, and it is more fun than you know. OK I have said enough for one week. Have a great 6pm class!
I thought it was cool, and funny, CJ was on the phone. Just another example of his nonstop energy. Kyle Maynard sounds familiar. CJ, do you have some of his story you can share?
CJ and Dani, love the blog! You guys and all the trainers are doing a great job with it. Excellent content and a nice, clean look, too.
Time 6:19 it was kind of weird that I did the same time as my partner Mike. Thanks for counting my reps makes it easier to concentrate.. Great Job!
