The Power of Community

“Invictus is more than a gym – it’s a community of support, education, and encouragement to achieve your fitness goals.”
I’ve been at CrossFit Invictus for more than four years now and I absolutely love it! My journey with CrossFit started at another box but it wasn’t long before I found Invictus and knew that I wanted to be a part of it!
One of the things that attracted me to Invictus was its strong emphasis on the community. When I watched the team compete at the CrossFit Games in 2009, I was very impressed by the amount of support their members gave them. This has been true at every event that I have seen the Sea of Green at since.
The SoCal Regional and The CrossFit Games are just one component of Invictus; it’s definitely not the only component of our supportive community. I’d like to take some time to acknowledge “Club 7:00 am”; if you haven’t been to it, you are probably living under a rock, or haven’t heard the buzz about the best hour of the day at Invictus! I may be a little bias since I coach all of the 7:00 am group classes, but I absolutely love doing it and love the smaller community within the community we have built.
We started offering 7:00 am group classes not long after I came on board and at first we only offered that class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. After awhile, that time slot was well attended, s0 we were able to request to have it every day of the week – and we haven’t looked back since!
So what is all the buzz about at 7:00 am then?!
Well, one of the things that makes it unique is our Guest DJ Friday! For awhile we had this every week on Fridays; one of our members brings in their own iPod playlist and we listened to their music during that hour. There are only two rules to Guest DJ Friday:
Rule #1. If you don’t like the playlist, keep it to yourself
Rule #2. If you like it, you can tell the DJ.
Over the course of time, just about everyone that has attended regularly has had the opportunity to bring their own playlist and it has been a blast! After awhile, we established a permanent resident DJ and he brings a playlist just about every Friday he can!
Beside the DJ factor, we’ve also nicknamed the 7:00 am hour to “Club 7” – how cool is that?! It’s like the fight club – you see the friendships that have been made, the bonds and connections that everyone has and anyone coming to it has noticed it. We’ve attempted to create an environment where all are welcomed, regardless of their ability, levels and experience. We often have new people or visitors in class and I am notorious for not starting class till everyone knows each other.
We have a couple of other things that make us unique as well. You know if you are late, more than likely you are going to be doing burpees or some sort of “motivational consequence”, as I like to call it. It usually depends on how much coffee I have had that morning and my mood. 🙂 Every once in awhile, I’ve been known to be lenient and forgiving – but don’t make it a habit or you will be called out!
Overall, we like to have fun; people come to 7:00 am to have a good time, get some great coaching and an awesome workout. I feel lucky, blessed and honored to have the opportunity to coach them everyday – I feel like I have the best job in the world! For the most part, everyone moves really well and that’s a testament to them wanting to get better while listening and working their butts off to be the best version of themselves! We often will end class with stretching in front of the white board, which usually serves as an opportunity for us to discuss some important topics such as nutrition and making wise lifestyle choices. Join us at “Club 7” anytime!
