The 2013 CrossFit Open starts this week!
Written by Jaimie Bougie

There is a new excitement in the air at Invictus and that can only mean one thing – the 2013 CrossFit Open starts this week!

For many of our members, this is your first time experiencing this exciting event, and now is a great time to clear up any questions you may have for this week.

How close are we to winning free tickets to this year’s SoCal Regionals, held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds?

We currently have just over 100 registered Sea of Green members, which is awesome!!  But now is the time to rally and get another 100 members signed up if we want to win the honor of saying we have the most supportive community in SoCal! This means I need all of you, fellow Invicti, to start encouraging others in your group classes to sign up and show the world what we can do as a team!

Are we allowed to scale these workouts?

I know that many of you are hesitant about signing up because you are worried that you are not strong enough or fast enough to perform these workouts.  Have no fear!  You will be able to scale each workout accordingly and still submit your score in support of Team Sea of Green.

How many workouts do I have to do?

Many of you have messaged me to say that you really want to support the Sea of Green, but you are unsure about committing yourself to a bunch of workouts.  When you sign up for the Open, you are only committing yourself to the first workout – 13.1. The 13 stands for the year – 2013 – and the 1 stands for week 1.  There will be a total of 5 workouts, but it is only required that members perform the first workout in order to be registered (and help us win those free tickets!).

For some of you, this could be your main event for the year.  Whether you scale it or do it “RX”, this first workout is a great opportunity for you test your limits and see the fruits of all your hard work over the past year.

And who knows – you may enjoy the camaraderie so much that you find yourself looking forward to 13.2 and beyond!

When am I doing the workout?  Do I have to do it on Friday Night?

Here’s the beauty of this whole thing – you’ll be doing the workouts whether you register or not!  We are planning on incorporating each weekly Open workout into our normal Friday and Saturday group classes.  That way, you can perform these workouts with your normal group of Invictus buddies and just have a blast with it.  You can attempt it RX, go for a PR or do it scaled – the option is yours.  It is not required for you to perform these workouts during our Friday Night Lights.

The first workout, 13.1, will be announced this Wednesday night at 5:00 pm PDT and you will have until 5:00 pm PDT on Sunday, March 10th, to register and submit your scores.

Tell me more Jaimie – besides the chance of free tickets, why else should I sign up for the 2013 Open?

One of the cool things about signing up for the Open this year is that you’ll have an all-access pass to the new, sophisticated leaderboard.  Why is this so cool? You’ll be able to see not only how you stack up on a worldwide level (don’t let this intimidate you, but instead encourage you!) but you can now see how you stack up on a local level with custom individual leaderboards – such as, creating a leaderboard for your 7:00 am Invictus classmates!  We fully encourage in-house, friendly competitions here at Invictus and you’ll now have the ability to create competition leaderboards between or within classes.  You’ll only be able to fully utilize this cool feature if you encourage others in your group classes to sign up!

Sign up for the Open and win free stuff!

Every member who is signed up for the 2013 Open by Friday night will be entered into our Invictus raffle drawing to win one of three gift baskets full of cool CrossFit inspired prizes!  We will draw three lucky winners this Friday, March 8th during our Friday Night Lights event.  You don’t have to be present to win but you do need to be registered by 5:00 pm on Friday.  So don’t miss out!

If you still have questions or any doubts about signing up for the Open, please let me know! You can submit questions to the comments below, message me privately on the Invictus Facebook page or send me an email at [email protected]

For all of you Invictus members who have not yet registered to participate in the Open on Team Sea of Green, please don’t wait until it’s too late!  Click here for a step-by-step description of how to get registered and on our team, or stop by the front desk before or after your workouts this week for assistance on signing up.

  1. Awesome article…. SUPER SUPER INFORMATIONAL…( I liked CJs “Is Open for You) which addressed various levels of Crossfitting- yet some questions remained). You have clarified the part where you can do the Open workout in any group class on select days.. Thanks Jamie! Although I am not sure if I will die (we never die), haha, I am just a tiny less scared now, knowing we will share pain in a group class setting–registered or not! ( might as well register). Nice to support Invictus and the athletes that will surely represent at Regionals!

    • KG – I can promise you that you won’t die….how do I know? Last year, some how some way, I survived 7 minutes of burpees. And I HATE burpees. :)

  2. Are you taking sign ups for time slots for Friday night lights? Do you have a preferred time for members who only “occasionally” show their face in group classes?

    • Any drop-in athletes or members who have not signed up on our heat sheet for the Friday Night Lights events will need to call on Friday (preferably before 5:00) to request a heat time. We will try to accommodate everyone, but until we know the duration of the events each week and the number of participants who sign up in the gym, we cannot make any promises.

    • We miss you tons, Deuce.

  3. I can just see Jaimie saying to herself “Tell me more Jaimie…” while writing the article :) Great article!

To anyone considering registering and participating, I highly recommend it. The experience at Invictus is like no other. Despite the fact that these workouts will push you to the limits, you somehow manage to enjoy it at the same time because of the energy at the gym. Even if you don’t sign up, you HAVE to attend Friday Night Lights. It’s amazing to see what everyone at Invictus is able to accomplish each week! More importantly, you get to cheer for all of your friends and coaches.

Wish we could be there! Good luck everyone!
