The Magic Bullet . . . It’s MAGIC!
Written by Michele Vieux

The best purchase I’ve made in a while was my recent splurge on a Magic Bullet at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I went in for a pillow and came out with this wonderful little blender in addition.

The Magic Bullet will run you about $50 at any home store and is well worth the money. It comes with a powerful motor and blades that an ice cube is no match for. It is small, so it doesn’t take up a lot of counter or cabinet space. And it comes with an assortment of blending containers including a set of drink glasses that frosty bevs can be made and consumed in.

If the name Magic Bullet sounds familiar, that’s because it is one of those “as seen on TV” products where the infomercial host whips up an amazing concoction in seconds. Well, I am vouching for what you may have seen. I have been able to whip up some delicious breakfast smoothies, iced coffees, Paleo shakes, salsas, and sauces in seconds.

One of my favorites is the breakfast-on-the-go shakes I can literally put together in less than one minute and be out the door with a nutritious and very tasty meal in my hand.

Ingredients:

  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 pear
  • ¼ c. egg white protein (I get mine online from Rose Acre Farms)
  • 2 ice cubes
  • ½ c. coconut milk
  • ½ c. water (or cold coffee)
  • ½ t. vanilla

Directions:

Put all ingredients into drink cup. Screw on blades. Place drink cup in Magic Bullet, twist to start motor. Wait 10 seconds and voila!

Let’s Get Dirty
Written by C.J. Martin

CrossFit Invictus has three (maybe four) teams entered in the World Famous Camp Pendleton Mud Run. The race will take place on June 6, 2009. Each five person team must be comprised of at least two females. We would like to put in one “competitive” team that will fight for the gym’s glory and hopefully win it all, but the other teams will be more focused on having a great time. If you would like to participate in this event, you need to let us know as soon as possible. Email your interest to cj@crossfitinvictus.com. Once we have our list of interested parties, we will circulate further information regarding the logistics of the event (meeting time, cost, etc…). If you have never participated in a mud run, you’ll be shocked at how much fun running through mud and up hills can be.

Rest and Recovery – Ice Massage
Written by Calvin Sun

Elite fitness requires an equally high level of maintenance and care. You wouldn’t expect your car to run at a peak level of performance without regular service and repair, so it doesn’t make sense when athletes neglect to take care of their bodies. Cryotherapy is an effective method for managing inflammation and providing pain relief. It is common to see cryotherapy used in a variety of sports. Most often you will see athletes with bags of ice on various parts of their body after competition. A simple method of icing is using a cold compress or ice bag in cycles of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. On the extreme end, you can jump into an ice bath after your next workout to see the recovery benefits (see Robb Wolf http://robbwolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/wolf-wanker.jpg). For those of you who have yet to build up such a tolerance, I would suggest ice massage as a simple and slightly less uncomfortable method of promoting recovery of the musculoskeletal structures.

Step 1. Fill your foam cup with water until it is almost full. You’ll want to leave some room for the expansion of ice.
Step 2. Place the cup in your freezer overnight or until the ice is solid.
Step 3. Peel away the foam cup to expose the ice.
Step 4. Keeping the ice moving, massage the affected area in small circles for 5 to 7 minutes. You can use a towel to clean up as the ice melts.

Ice massage is cheap and effective. All you need is a styrofoam cup like the one pictured here or if you are environmentally conscientious you can purchase a reusable product such as the Cryocup (http://www.cryocup.com/). An ice cube could be used but I would strongly recommend the foam cup or Cryocup as it will keep your hand from freezing.
