Athlete Profile – Patrick Finucane
Written by George Economou

It’s a real pleasure presenting our next Invictus Athlete: Patrick Finucane (fin-ewe-can). You may have seen this coming, like there was some writing-on-the-wall (or whiteboard), and for good reason. Patrick is starting his campaign for city council and has asked Invictus to help spread the word. Seeing as how he’s a stand-up kind of guy, and how CrossFit Invictus is all about supporting community efforts and keeping San Diego clean, it’s our pleasure. For those who don’t personally know Patrick, here is a primer.

Nickname: The Councilman

Website: www.PatrickFinucane.com

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Occupation: Mechanical Engineer

Usual workout time: 6:00 a.m.

Member since: January 2009

How did your CrossFit journey begin?

Mary (fiancé) made me go on a Saturday and then I couldn’t walk for a week.

And, why do you keep coming back?

Because Mary wakes me up every morning.

Fair enough.  Do you adhere to a specific diet?

Yes…soda and chips.  Oh, and anything Mary puts in front of me.

And what does Mary put in front of you?

Vegetables…lots of vegetables.

What are some of your fitness goals?

No longer be 27% body fat (taken in Feb 2009) and to be able to beat Mary…in anything. Oh, and be able to walk lots of precincts without sweating.

Good segue; so I understand you’re running for some kind of office. Please tell us about it.

I’m running for City Council, District 2. It’s the area that covers from Pacific Beach to downtown including all of the coast, and areas West of Interstate 5.

When is the election, and why are you running?

The election is June 8, 2010. I decided to run because I want to make a difference in City Hall. San Diego faces a lot of long term problems that aren’t being addressed…pension, infrastructure, pollution, issues that keep getting put off. I want to do something about it before it seems too insurmountable.

Is this typical lead time to start campaigning?

Yes, because you have to raise a significant amount of money; $100K on the low end, and there will be some candidates that raise upwards of $500K.

I’m sure your campaign manager is all over it (Mary nods confidently)!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the CrossFit Invictus community?

I like CrossFit a lot because I don’t like working out on my own. In order to stay in shape, I need a competitive environment, which is unique to CrossFit. I would recommend this to anyone because I’ve seen improvements in everything I do. Oh yeah, and the people here are great. I love my fellow 6am’ers.

Mary, you’ve been mentioned quite a few times today. Is there anything you’d like to add?

Wow, there are so many inappropriate things I can say about Patrick. Everyone really knows Patrick as this quiet guy who works out at 6am, but I want them to see him how he is the rest of the day: a highly engaged professional, passionate about his work and community, a man who is ready to take on the big issues facing our community.

Mary, as Patrick’s campaign manager, what are you hoping to achieve from our upcoming event?

We wanted to do an event like this with CFI because Patrick and I know mainly just 6am’rs and want to meet other members. CFI is filled with great people who are very supportive of each other. There are also a lot of members who live in District Two, so we thought it would be a great way to get the word out about Patrick and his campaign. Since the incumbent is going to raise significantly more money than we will be able to, Patrick’s key to success will be getting support and help from everyone he knows…and then have those people tell all of their friends about him, etc. It’s going to be a grassroots sort of campaign. At some point during the event, Patrick will give a speech (don’t worry-nothing too long or boring) about himself and why he’s running. What’s important to us is that A LOT of people from the gym come so that Patrick can meet them and they can learn about his campaign. If throughout the course of the day anyone is interested in supporting the campaign in any way, all they have to do is talk to me, Patrick or give us an email address so we can put them on our list. We just want to let people know what he’s doing and have fun in the process.

That sounds great Mary, can’t wait to see you both on Saturday.
