Happy Birthday Dani!

More Birthday Wishes
The birthday season continues at CrossFit Invictus. Dani somehow avoided a video homage with her bouncing around looking like a fool, but she should not be spared the stories and well wishes. If you have any good stories or accounts of times that Dani helped or inspired you, please post them to comments.

    Happy birthday!!

Dani, I adore you. There’s no other way of putting it. Your smile lights up any room you walk into, and your warm and loving nature makes us all feel so special. In the middle of any crappy hard WOD you always have a word of encouragement and a tip on how to improve a lift.

I wish you happiness and many many years of birthdays. You deserve the absolute best of everything!

Where do I begin…I met Dani at CFSD on one of my first days as a CrossFitter. We were the only two women in the 6AM class and we immediately bonded. I remember us being bitter about a weighted pull-up WOD since both of us could barely do regular pull-ups at the time. We began working out and hanging out together. I always looked to her for instruction and leadership since she was a veteran. Whether it was watching her squat form or her pushing through the most grueling WOD, or winning the L-sit, superman, and post-WOD stretching competitions, I was always in awe of her freakish flexibility and body control. Dani was always an inspiration. I think the only time I inspired her was during heavy deadlifts when she asked me “what do you think about when you lift that much weight,” and I replied…”not crapping my pants.” She laughed and we have been buddies ever since.

Oh Dantelope….oh yes, how did Dantelope get her name?…One day, Dani (as her name was at the time) and I were running at Torrey Pines. I managed to stay on her heels (or hooves, if you will) through the trails and downhill portion (although I now realize she was probably holding back as not to burst my ego bubble). We hit the sand and she started to pull ahead. I like to think it is because she weighs about as much as a feather and the sand was no match for her tiny, lightweight hoofprint. But then the horror began. As we ran up the infamous Torrey Pines hill, she sprinted ahead of me with the leaps and bounds of an antelope. Every 50 yards or so, she would literally circle back around me and yell, “faster M! Pick up the pace!” People coming down the hill were looking at me with pity and I told them…”she’s evil and half antelope…Dantelope.”

    That is all.

There have been many more amazing memories. Girls nights, many-a-moving adventure, meat on a stick, beerfests…to that I write this Haiku titled:

    “Ode to Dantelope Moving Furniture”

    Always stay locked out
    Whilst moving an akward couch
    Ignore passing cars

    Laughing very hard
    Whilst moving an akward couch
    Geez, who cut the cheese?!

    Beds from Ikea
    Always missing screws and parts
    Oops, the screw poked through

    The kitchen fixture
    Isn’t that necessary
    It falls on our heads

    Through all the rough times
Who needs beds, lights, couches cause
    We’ve got good girlfriends

  9. Cody-Mac says:

Who else would stand behind you and support you as you attempt to complete the WOD, doing rings dips one by one? DANI! thats who! Happy 25th birthday Dani! Thanks for your inspiration and motivation you provide everytime we work out togther.
    Love Always The Macs :)

  10. Mark Riebel says:

Dani, it’s such a pleasure having you around because I know you’ll always light up the room with your smile and attitude. I’ve always enjoyed working out alongside you because your in-WOD motivational talks and out loud counting for yourself never lets me forget just where you are ;) Plus, your redneck-spotting skills are second to none (then again, they were everywhere at that concert so I guess it couldn’t have been too hard). Have an awesome birthday!

  11. Lizzle says:

Long long ago . . . before Dani was Dantelope and I ate Calzone’s on the eve of a 6am workout two gals crossed paths at an early morning WOD.
    “Hi, I’m Dani”
“Hi, I’m Liz. If the double-unders make you pee your pants, don’t worry about it, it’s totally normal, I do it all the time”.
    “Ohhhhh. Ok, Thanks”.
Within weeks the two met again for some kind of crazy-ass Chelsea on steroids WOD. T-Bumba puked afterwards and I only made it through a couple of rounds and had to run to the bathroom. Embarassment was the least of my concerns, I worried I wouldn’t ever leave the bathroom and thought I may get fired from my job. And then, a little flowered dixie cup filled with water slides under the stall and I hear Dani ask, “Liz . . .are you okay?”
Dani has been my little flowered dixie cup making sure that I am okay ever since. You know what they say . . . a friendship that starts in the bathroom . . .
You never know when one of those important people are going to walk into your life and help you become your best self. I am so blessed that you did. Happy Birthday!

PS, Time to start studying. ;)

  15. Michael P says:

    Dani,

I met Dani (and CJ) at my Level 1 a while ago. Since then they both have been so kind in offering any and all help, input, advice…it always reminds me of the amazing kindness within our community.

Thank you and have a beautiful day!

Happy Birthday from CFMSP in Minneapolis.

  16. mike says:

What can I say? Dani, you are one of the sweetest people I know and your always-positive attitude infects even me. I get amped every time we work out together because I know you will not only push me but guarantee a ton of fun in the process. I hope you have an even better day than your usual wonderful or awesome days because you deserve it. Happy Birthday!

  17. Trish says:

  19. courtland says:

Happy Birthday Dani. I remember seeing you at CFSD the first time I trained with CJ and I remember thinking how strong you looked (I think you were doing OHS) and though you were obviously working hard, you were smiling and, though probably exhausted afterwards, you still came over and said hello and were very welcoming.

As for today’s wod, it is a certainty that push ups + 25# DB bear crawls will punish the shoulders AND it is a certainty that 25# DB bear crawls + situps will punish the core. Put them all three together for time and you will end up a sweaty punished mess. And Barry, I was only 21 seconds behind you.
And Cynthia – Jeden jazyk nikdy nestačí

  20. Rhonda says:

Dani, if it weren’t for you I might have dropped out of crossfit altogether. You made the movements and lifts accessible to a veeeerrrrry out-of-shape me! Your positive attitude and patience encouraged me to believe that I could actually be a crossfitter. I will always be grateful to you! Have a fabulous bd!!!

  21. Kristen Hatcher says:

I met Dani on my very first Saturday workout at CFSD. She helped me out with my squats and really encouraged me throughout the grueling workout. This was a big part of what hooked me and continued to make an impact throughout my elements training.

Happy Birthday, Dani!!! Your energy is contagious and your strength inspiring! I hope you enjoy a GREAT day!! :-)

    Dani – Happy Birthday!

I’m not going to be very original, and I hope you aren’t bored hearing this. You are one of the nicest people I know. It’s always great to get encouragement from you (and hugs!).

  27. Carla Mac says:

Headed out to my garage to do this workout. Tommy is under the weather and therefore can’t bring him down to the gym! It’s only been the weekend and three days and I am missing the gym!

  28. Chris F says:

Happy Birthday D!! I was thinking of you all today at our 0430 PT session because I noticed a Concept II rower was in our gym here at the academy.
I miss you guys and CrossFitting a whole lot. Hope to get to CFI on one of my weekends off!
    Respect,
    BC

p.s. – we were doing air squats the other morning and one of the instructors kept yelling at me about my back and said that I was fully evolved and had no excuse for sandbagging !

  29. Mary says:

    Happy Birthday Dani!
I am so glad that you did my introduction sessions back at CFSD- I know that your teachings and encouragement when I began with the 6 am crew greatly contributed to my enjoyment of crossfit . You are so great to work out with because you not only push me, but you are always up for some joking. You have such a great perspective and balance. I hope you have a truly wonderful day.
