An Interview with Dutch Lowy

(Dutch Lowy is the star of the recently released, “Every Second Counts.” Since it’s release Dutch has been running from paparazzi and turning down propositions from A-list movie stars like Cameron Diaz. I was lucky to pin him down for a few minutes for an interview.)
CJ - Dutch, as some people know, you were homeless for the better part of last year. Rumors were swirling around the CrossFit community that the 7th place finisher in the 2008 CrossFit Games was a transient who lived on a diet of discarded bacon grease and slept wherever he could find shelter. That was pretty much true, but you’ve turned your experience into something invaluable for CrossFit athletes and coaches. How did this seminar come about?
Dutch - That’s pretty much right. After the CrossFit Games last year I spent 4 months traveling to different CrossFit facilities and coaching at certifications for CrossFit HQ. During that time I had a chance to visit and hang out in more than 50 CrossFit facilities and learn from some of the best coaches in the country. Unfortunately, I also saw some coaching methodologies and programming that were not so good. Over the last year I compiled what I had learned during my visits to other CrossFit affiliates, as well as what I learned from my two years as an affiliate owner/operator, and realized that I had a unique perspective from which other CrossFit affiliate owners, trainers and athletes could benefit.
CJ - I would have killed for the opportunity that you had to spend 4 months learning and researching. But few CrossFit coaches and athletes even have the time to spend a few hours each day learning from others and improving their methods. I love that you offer a distilled version of what you learned over the course of several months. As a coach, I think your seminar is mandatory continuing education, but it’s not just for CrossFit affiliate owners and coaches is it?
Dutch - No, not at all. The topics I cover in the seminar are applicable to all athletes, as well as coaches. Your goal as an athlete is to find the most efficient training protocol for maximizing your athletic/fitness potential. Coaches have the same goal for their clients. Whether you’re a coach or an athlete, understanding how to increase power output in a workout or over the course of month of workouts is critical to your ability to maximize your training efforts. It’s also critical to know how and when to scale in order to maintain or increase power output. At the end of the day, the athlete benefits most if they, as well as their coach, understand these things.
CJ – As you know, we’re also going to have a BBQ and party at the gym after your seminar with all the participants. As an added attraction, I have promised everyone that you will be arm-wrestling our friends John Welbourn and Max Mormont (who will be attending the seminar) in back-to-back matches. I am just wondering if you’re feeling confident, and whether you plan to drink motor oil before those matches?
Dutch – I was actually planning on taking them on at the same time. John gets my left arm cause Max is freaking strong! I’m pretty sure motor oil is Paleo so I am all over it.
CJ - Awesome. I am looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.

I am SO impressed with everyone who tried out for the affiliate team. You guys were so inspiring to watch! I admire you all very much.
The workout was tough even scaled down as much as I did. I think I’ll stick to being a spectator!
